Facilities & Support Services

Accounting Office

Department of Chemistry Accounting Office, located in 141 Smith

Center for Metals in Biocatalysis

The Center for Metals in Biocatalysis has been formed to foster interactions among the various groups at the University of Minnesota who are interested in metal ions and their roles in biocatalysis.

Center for Sustainable Polymers

The Center for Sustainable Polymers brings together participants from across the University of Minnesota leading research projects focused on polymers derived from renewable resources for a wide range of advanced applications. These basic research efforts will help promote future economic development, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability in the emergent area of biobased products.

Computer and Electronic Services

Responsible for the setup and maintainence of computers, electronic equipment and centralized servers within the Chemistry department.

Glass Technology Service

Fabrication and Repair of scientific glass and laboratory equipment for Industrial, Chemical, Medical and Research facilities.

Departmental Grant Support

Guidelines and Resources for Submitting a Research Grant Proposal

Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering

I PRIME accommodates various levels of corporate participation, ranging from technical planning to hand-on collaborative research with university faculty and students. This cooperative venture provides an ideal environment for training the next generation of scientists and engineers while strengthening research in both the academic and industrial sectors.

LeClaire-Dow Instrumentation Facility contains:

Supported by generous contributions from Dow Chemical Company, this is a centralized facility for U of MN and outside users. It provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for mass spectrometry, NMR spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography.

Lecture Demo

The Lecture Demonstration Facility exists to provide instructors with the resources that will enable them to illustrate the chemical principles behind their lecture material and in so doing, hopefully, engender a greater understanding of those principles amongst their audience.

Machine Shop

Chemistry no longer operates a machine shop. For machine shop services contact the Physics Machine Shop at 612-624-7048.

Mass Spectrometry Lab

The Department of Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility maintains and operates the Department's high-performance mass spectrometers.

Materials Characterization Facility

The Characterization Facility ("CharFac") is a multi-user, shared instrumentation facility for materials research spanning from nanotechnology to biology and medicine. Our analytical capabilities include microscopy via electron beams, force probes and visible light; elemental and chemical imaging including depth profiling; elemental, chemical and mass spectroscopy; atomic and molecular structure analysis via X-ray, ion or electron scattering; nanomechanical and nanotribological probes; and other tools for surface and thin-film metrology.

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center

(MRSEC) This NSF Center, with additional University and industrial funding, supports research in Engineered Multiblock Polymers, Organic Optoelectronic Interfaces, Magnetic Heterostructures, and Nanoparticle Based Materials. The MRSEC contributes to an extensive array of Shared Experimental Facilities at the University, and operates a wide-reaching suite of K-12 and undergraduate education and outreach programs.

Microcomputer Lab (CHEM)
located in 101D Smith Hall

This computer lab is a service provided by the Department of Chemistry for use primarily by its graduate and undergraduate students.

Nanofabrication Facility

The Nanofabrication Center (NFC) is an interdisciplinary facility within the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota for faculty and industrial research. Our mission is to support education, research, and industrial collaboration in microelectronics; and other related research involving nanofabrication.

NMR Lab

The NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) lab is a facility of the chemistry department; its principal job is to provide access to NMR equipment and techniques for departmental research.

Polymer Synthesis Facility

Custom polymer synthesis on large scale for external sale.

Research Stockroom

We carry a full line of chemicals, general laboratory, office and cleaning supplies. Link to Application for Stockroom purchasing card.
