The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments at the University of Minnesota. Founded in 1904, the Department of Chemistry ranks among the nation's top 20 doctorate-granting programs. Our faculty members provide students with exceptional educational experiences in major sub-fields of chemistry, and conduct innovative and collaborative research that has an impact on the state, the nation, and the world.

Chemistry's contributions to scientific and technological advances are vital as we work on solving energy and environmental problems, make medical advances, and ensure that our children have a safer and healthier world. The need for trained chemists in research, industry, business, health care, government, and education has never been greater.

Opportunities for Support

• Chemistry Special Projects Fund (#3261) The most important fund in the Department of Chemistry, the Special Projects Fund provides unrestricted support for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty and the academic program.
• Chemistry Faculty Support Fund (#5015) This fund was established to promote faculty excellence in the Department of Chemistry by providing funds to support chemistry faculty.
• Stanley G. Bonnema Scholarship Fund (#6392) This endowed fund provides scholarship support for undergraduate students in honor of Stanley G. Bonnema and his many years of dedicated service to the Department of Chemistry. This award is for new or transfer students with academic promise and financial need.
• Izaak M. Kolthoff Fund (#1073) The purpose is to bring outstanding lecturers to the University for a lecture or series of lectures in the Chemistry Department and to offer fellowships to top quality prospective graduate students.
• John Overend Memorial Fund (#3260) Donations to be used for graduate fellowships in memory of the late Prof. John Overend, a former faculty member.
• John Wertz Fellowship in Chemistry (#5228) To support graduate fellowships in the department of Chemistry in memory of the late Prof. Wertz.
• Paul G. and Gerda Ann Gassman Chemistry Graduate Student Travel Fund (#8486) A new fund established to provide one-time awards to exceptional, full-time Chemistry graduate students involved in research projects in the field of organic chemistry to present their research findings at a national conference.

Other funds that have been supported by alumni and friends to strengthen the Department of Chemistry include: Marian Stankovich Memorial Fund and Wayland E. Noland Fellowship in Organic Chemistry.

Endowed chairs, professorships, scholarships, and fellowships are the core building blocks for the Department of Chemistry's future. You can make a gift to a current fund, or create your own.

Estate gifts allow you to create your lasting legacy within the Department of Chemistry and the College of Science and Engineering. We offer many ways to make such a provision.
