ResearchPerhaps it is no surprise that the Land of 10,000 Lakes would be home to a wide range of environmental chemistry research. While there is no formal course program, numerous faculty members in the Department of Chemistry have environmentally focused projects. Particular strengths are in the areas of atmospheric particles, aquatic photochemistry, reactive surfaces, computational chemistry, renewable materials, and new analytical methods. Part of a Community of Environmental Scholarsthe University of Minnesota is committed to improving our knowledge of the environment and its health. Some of the notable environmental centers and research programs that have an environmentally chemistry concentration include the Water Resources Science program, the Large Lakes Observatory, the Limnological Research Center, the Environmental Engineering Program in Civil Engineering, and the Soil Sciences program. As part of the Strategic Positioning Initiative, an Institute on the Environment has been proposed. While in the planning stages, the I on E seeks to be a system-wide, world-class Institute devoted to environmental research.
